ALDEBURGH CINEMA AT 100

ALDEBURGH CINEMA AT 100

This Summer Aldeburgh Cinema will reach a milestone. This little cinema on the Suffolk Coast will be 100 years old and we are delighted to bring to you, our audience, a year-long programme of events to celebrate this momentous occasion.

We launch our birthday celebrations on 17 May with a morning press conference hosted by BBC Radio host Bill Turnbull, to which all are welcome, and a special evening performance on 35mm of the extraordinary South: Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Glorious Epic of the Antarctic, with world-renowned pianist and film music scholar Neil Brand performing the score live-to-picture. Friends of Aldeburgh Cinema receive a week-long priority booking period for this performance from 16 Apr, with general sales beginning 23 Apr.

We follow this with another Neil Brand performance on 10 June as The Aldeburgh Festival brings a collection of Charlie Chaplin shorts to the screen accompanied by Brand’s nimble fingers. July sees a very special birthday performance for the kids as part of our Little Popcorn Club (it’s all about Disney this year) and the highlight of the year sees our very first Cinema on the Beach with open air performances on 9 August The Greatest Showman and 10 August Grease Sing-a-Long. Both Cinema on the Beach performances are FREE for all as we give back to the community that has supported the Cinema throughout its storied history.

On 1-3 November we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the aldeburgh docfest with a weekend programme of documentaries painstakingly selected by our Festival Artistic Director, Jill Green, once again accompanied by special guests, filmmakers, and experts from all walks of life.

Our December event remains a closely guarded (wrapped) secret so be sure to stay signed up to our emails to hear about this one first! I hope you will join us in celebrating Aldeburgh Cinema’s first 100 years, and I hope the Cinema can continue welcoming you and future audiences for many years to come.
